QWERTY vs Dvorak vs Colemak: Which Keyboard Layout Is Best?

QWERTY was designed in the 1870s to solve a mechanical problem that no longer exists. Several alternative keyboard layouts claim to be faster, more comfortable, or healthier for your hands. The debate between QWERTY and its alternatives has raged for nearly a century โ€” and the answer is more nuanced than either side admits.

The Case Against QWERTY

QWERTY's critics argue that the layout was designed to prevent mechanical jams โ€” not to optimize typing efficiency. Common letters like E, T, A, O, I, N are spread across different fingers and rows rather than concentrated on the strongest fingers on the home row.

Analysis of English text shows that QWERTY typists spend about 52% of their keystrokes on the home row. The Dvorak layout, by contrast, places the most common English letters on the home row, achieving about 70% home row usage. Less finger travel should mean faster, more comfortable typing.

Dvorak: The Classic Alternative

August Dvorak, a professor at the University of Washington, patented his Simplified Keyboard in 1936. The design places all five vowels on the left home row (A O E U I) and the most common consonants on the right (D H T N S). Most typing should alternate hands, reducing fatigue.

Studies on Dvorak's speed advantage are inconclusive. Some show modest gains; others show no significant difference for experienced typists. What is more consistent is the finding that Dvorak users report less finger fatigue over long typing sessions.

The main barrier to Dvorak adoption is the time required to retrain โ€” typically 20โ€“40 hours of practice to reach proficiency โ€” and the practical problem of using shared keyboards that will always be QWERTY.

Colemak: The Modern Compromise

Colemak, designed by Shai Coleman in 2006, is the most popular alternative to QWERTY after Dvorak. It was designed to be more efficient than QWERTY while being easier to learn than Dvorak โ€” only 17 keys change position compared to QWERTY (Dvorak changes 33).

Colemak achieves about 74% home row usage and is designed to maximize same-hand rolls (typing consecutive letters with the same hand in a natural rolling motion). It also preserves common shortcuts like Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+X, Ctrl+C, and Ctrl+V in their QWERTY positions.

Colemak Mod-DH is a further refinement that moves the D and H keys off the QWERTY center column, which many users find more comfortable.

Should You Switch?

For most people: No. If you are already a proficient QWERTY typist, the gains from switching do not outweigh the weeks of reduced productivity during the transition, the frustration of using shared keyboards, and the ongoing mental overhead of maintaining two layouts.

Consider switching if: you are starting from scratch, you type for very long hours and experience hand or wrist fatigue on QWERTY, or you are a developer or writer who types primarily on your own keyboard and has weeks available for retraining.

The most important factor in typing speed is not your layout โ€” it is your technique. A skilled QWERTY typist will always outperform a Dvorak beginner. Master touch typing on whatever layout you use now before even considering a switch.
